Colchester: Music contest a big hit
By Claire Owen
A battle of the bands competition set up by a group of youngsters looks set to become an annual fixture.
Colchester Youth Council put the event together after a long-running borough council contest was axed last year.
With the help of Stanway councillor Lesley Scott-Boutell, the competition was held at Funderworld in Colne Bank Avenue at the weekend.
Mr Happy Chainsaw took the first prize, with Ashes of Stone and Hypertheory taking the second and third places respectively.
Chris Hopkins from CYC said: “We were delighted with how the event went, and couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome after several months’ planning.”
Mark Westall, manager of Mr Happy Chainsaw, said the members were “delighted” to have won the contest.
He added: “It makes all the hard work and rehearsals worthwhile.
“They are particularly excited with the prize which will be a support slot at Colchester Arts Centre. It’s a premier music venue in town and not easy to get a gig there.”
He added that the band are playing at the River Lodge in Colchester tonight, and at the Twist on Tuesday.
“They would love some support,” he said.
